Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel Studios’ Phase 6 crossover event hitting theaters December 18, 2026, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely. The film picks up 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts and sets up the multiverse-wide conflict that leads into Avengers: Secret Wars.
Official synopses describe the story as “beloved heroes from three distinct universes” being set on a “deadly collision course” to face an “existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered”. Those three universes are Earth-616’s Avengers, Wakandans, and New Avengers; Earth-828’s Fantastic Four; and the “original” X-Men from a separate universe. The catalyst is the arrival of Victor von Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. in a full-body armor and mask, using a Latverian accent distinct from Tony Stark. Doom is introduced as “a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic” who will “unleash a cascading crisis across the multiverse”.
CinemaCon 2026 footage opened with Charles Xavier’s Professor X sensing “something is coming” as Doom makes a dramatic entrance at the X-Mansion courtyard, warning of an impending catastrophe and an “unthinkable decision” the heroes may need to make. The trailer then cuts to the former Avengers Tower, now rebranded with a “New Avengers” logo, where Sam Wilson’s Avengers, the New Avengers/Thunderbolts, and the Fantastic Four converge. Thor declares that stopping Doom requires “a miracle,” which turns out to be Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers returning for the first time since Endgame. Other beats include Namor parting the ocean floor to reveal a desert-like landscape where the Fantastic Four meet the Wakandans.
Doom’s Latveria looms over the story, with the Russos teasing the flag and “#DomLatveria” as part of the film’s marketing. The post-credits scene of Thunderbolts set this up, with Yelena Belova referencing a “space crisis” — likely realities colliding — and an inter-dimensional ship carrying the Fantastic Four arriving with a warning. In the comics inspiration, Doom salvages pieces of a destroyed multiverse to create “Battleworld,” where he rules as a god. The film is described as a “complete reinvention” and “very radical” by Joe Russo, with Doom’s story crafted to be both faithful to comics and brand-new for the MCU.
Doomsday assembles one of the largest MCU casts yet. Returning Avengers include Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, and Winston Duke. The New Avengers/Thunderbolts bring Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, and Danny Ramirez. The Fantastic Four are led by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. The X-Men contingent features Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming, plus Channing Tatum as Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine. Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Tenoch Huerta Mejia’s Namor, and others also appear. The Russos say they’re treating this as “phase zero” — a reset not leaning on the past, with POV shifts to handle the massive ensemble.
Together, these heroes must confront Doom’s multiversal incursion before Earth-616 and the other universes are destroyed or remade under his rule, setting the stage for Secret Wars.
