Dark Facts, Kamen Rider: Part 1

The Foundation of Tragedy (Showa Era)
Kidnapping and Non-Consensual Surgery: The original 1971 Kamen Rider, Takeshi Hongo, did not choose his powers. He was kidnapped by the terrorist group
Shocker and forcibly remodeled into a cyborg. He only escaped moments before a final brainwashing procedure.

The Loss of Touch: In the original manga and early lore, the Riders’ cyborg bodies are described as cold and unfeeling. They lost the ability to feel a human touch, a warm breeze, or the taste of food, making their existence a living death.

The “Monster” in the Mirror: The iconic mask isn’t just for show; it hides horrific surgical scars. In many iterations, if a Rider exerts too much power, their human face begins to “crack,” revealing the mechanical or insectoid monster underneath.

Kamen Rider V3’s Family Massacre: Shiro Kazami’s entire family—parents and sister—were murdered in front of him by the Destron monster Scissors Jaguar. He only became a Rider out of a desperate, suicidal need for revenge.

Riderman’s Suicide Mission: Joji Yuki was a scientist for the villains who was tortured and had his arm melted off in acid by his own comrades. He eventually sacrificed himself in a nuclear explosion to save Tokyo, though he was later “resurrected.”

Amazon’s Animalistic Brutality: Kamen Rider Amazon was raised in the jungle and fought like a wild animal. Instead of flashy kicks, he frequently defeated enemies by literally shredding them apart with his fins and teeth, resulting in visible “blood” sprays.

Kamen Rider Black’s Brotherly Betrayal: Kotaro Minami and his brother-figure Nobuhiko were kidnapped to fight to the death for the title of Creation King.
Kotaro spent the series knowing his ultimate enemy was his only family.

Shin Kamen Rider’s Body Horror: The 1992 Shin movie stripped away the “hero” aesthetic. The transformation was a painful, biological mutation where the protagonist’s skin tore open to reveal a wet, insectoid creature.

The Death of the Creator: Shotaro Ishinomori, the creator of the franchise, died in 1998. He often viewed his Riders as “tragic cross-dressers” who wore the clothes of the enemy to protect a humanity that would likely fear them if they knew the truth.

The “Great Leader” is Humanity: In some early conclusions, it is hinted that the “Great Leader” of the villains is fueled by the inherent darkness and hatred of the human heart, meaning the Riders can never truly “win.”

The Heisei Era: Psychological Warfare

Kuuga’s Mental Toll: Yusuke Godai was a pacifist forced to kill. Every time he defeated a Grongi, he felt a piece of his humanity slip away. By the end, he was terrified of becoming the “Ultimate Darkness” he fought against.

The Grongi’s Serial Killing Games: The villains in Kuuga didn’t want to conquer the world; they were playing a “game” where they had to kill specific numbers of humans in creative, gruesome ways within a time limit.

Agito’s Divine Genocide: The “Overlord of Darkness” in Agito began killing humans who possessed the “Agito” seed because he feared human evolution. He viewed his victims as his “children” whom he had to “cull” for their own good.
