Arsenal: VR vs. Metal Hero. Part 1

April 14, 2026

In the American adaptation VR Troopers, the arsenal utilized by Ryan, Kaylee, and J.B. was sourced from three distinct Toei Metal Hero series: Space Sheriff Shaider, Chikuu Sentai Winslow (Spielban), and Choujinki Metalder. The contrast in how these weapons were presented is stark, as the American show often repurposed individual tactical gear into a shared team arsenal, whereas the original Tokusatsu counterparts treated them as unique, technologically sovereign systems tied to a single hero’s legacy.

The Laser Lance and Laser Pistol

In VR Troopers, the Laser Lance is the primary weapon of J.B. Reese, often used to deliver a finishing strike or to deflect energy bolts from Grimlord’s mutants. This weapon, along with the standard issue Laser Pistol, was portrayed as a high-tech energy tool developed by Professor Hart for the Trooper team. In contrast, its Japanese counterpart comes from Chikuu Sentai Spielban, where it is known as the Twin Blade. In the original series, the weapon is deeply personal to Spielban, reflecting his status as a galactic warrior seeking his lost family, and the choreography was significantly more fluid and violent than the edited action sequences seen in the American version.

The Command Thruster

The Command Thruster is the specialized gauntlet and control device used by J.B. to summon his vehicles and execute energy-based attacks. In the show, it served as a Swiss Army knife of tactical options, allowing J.B. to interface with the Trooper lab. Its Tokusatsu equivalent is the Spielban Gauntlet, which served a similar function but was tied to the “Slasher” combat style unique to the Metal Hero genre. While J.B. used it as a team-support tool, Spielban used it as a vital link to the Gran Nasca mother ship, emphasizing the “lone survivor” theme of the original series that was largely absent in the team-centric VR Troopers.
