What if?: Zordon chose Bulk and Skull to be Power Rangers in the very first episode?

When Rita Repulsa escaped her 10,000-year imprisonment, Alpha 5’s panic was palpable, but Zordon remained calm as he scanned Angel Grove for the “five overbearing and overemotional humans” required to harness the Morphing Grid. However, a sudden cosmic surge interfered with the scanner, bypassing the martial artists and gymnasts at the Youth Center and locking onto two distinct energy signatures in the middle of a prank: Farkas “Bulk” Bulkmeier and Eugene “Skull” Skullovitch. In a flash of white light, the bullies were teleported from the quarry directly into the Command Center, leaving their detention slips behind as they tumbled onto the metallic floor, terrified and convinced they had been abducted by the government for their latest stunt.

Standing before the towering head of Zordon, Bulk and Skull’s usual bravado evaporated; Skull hid behind Bulk, while Bulk attempted to flex his muscles to intimidate the floating hologram. Zordon, realizing the error but bound by the urgent threat of Rita’s minions, explained that they had been chosen to protect the planet as the Power Rangers. While Jason, Billy, and the others would have accepted the duty with solemn nods, Bulk and Skull immediately began negotiating, asking if the suits came with endorsement deals or if they could use the zords to tow cars for cash. Alpha 5 frantically tried to explain that the Power Coins were the universe’s most powerful weapon, but the duo was too busy trying to figure out how to detach the communicators to pawn them.

Transported to the city center just as Goldar and a squad of Putties attacked, the pair fumbled with their Morphers. Bulk managed to activate his transformation by accidentally crushing his Coin in a fist of panic, becoming the Red Ranger, while Skull became the Black Ranger after tripping and face-planting into the activation button. The fight that ensued was less a display of martial arts prowess and more a chaotic slapstick routine; Bulk defeated a Putty by trying to run away and accidentally back-elbowing it into a light post, while Skull simply flailed his arms wildly, causing the clay minions to slip on his discarded helmet. Goldar looked on in utter bewilderment, unsure whether to strike the defenders or wait for the comedy routine to end.

When Rita Repulsa threw her staff down to the Earth, making Goldar grow to massive size, Zordon ordered the duo to call upon their Dinozords. The resulting disaster was immediate; Bulk, piloting the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord, treated the giant robot like a bumper car, crashing into buildings to create shortcuts, while Skull, in the Mastodon Dinozord, spent the entire battle trying to figure out how to work the radio. The attempt to form the Megazord was a catastrophe, as they missed the docking sequence entirely and instead tangled the robots’ limbs together, creating a clumsy, mechanical ball that rolled down the street and accidentally crushed Goldar against the mountainside, forcing the villain to retreat in sheer embarrassment.

Back at the Command Center, Zordon stared into the viewing globe in silence, watching the replay of the Megazord trip-and-fall victory. Alpha 5 was hyperventilating, muttering “Ay yi yi” repeatedly while running diagnostics on the scratched zords. Meanwhile, Bulk and Skull, demorphed and back in their street clothes, high-fived each other, convinced they were the greatest heroes the world had ever seen. They swaggered out of the Command Center, planning to use their new fame to finally get dates with Kimberly and Trini, leaving Zordon to solemnly wonder if perhaps humanity would have been safer under Rita Repulsa’s rule.
